editing techniques

In film, a  match cut  is a  cut  from one shot to another where the two shots are matched by the action or subject and subject matter. For example, in a duel a shot can go from a long shot on both contestants via a  cut  to a medium closeup shot of one of the duellists. Match on action -  Cutting on  action  or  matching on action  refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that  matches  the first shot's  action . A common example is a man walking up to a door and reaching for the knob. - Graphical match cut -  is an extremely powerful transitional device in modern editing. Here, an idea is conveyed within a single assembly – a single  cut . This cut’s intention is to skip forward or backward in time while a) maintaining a continuity of action and b) creating a metaphorical link between the images that bookend the cut. It can ...

Double Indemnity analysis

Image
‘It has all the characteristics of the classic forties film as I respond to it. It’s in black and white, it has fast badinage, it’s very witty, a story from the classic age. It has Edward G. Robinson, and Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray and the tough voice-over. It has brilliantly written dialogue, and the perfect score.’  Much has been said about the use of low-key lighting in film noir. Like painters, cinematographers create an effect of chiaroscuro, and darkness tends to dominate the shot composition.  Double Indemnity  seems to be sculpted by light (and absence of light), anchoring the movie within the film noir tradition. In film noir, lighting implicitly develops key points around the story and the protagonists. It hides them from the audience’s sight, and wraps the plot in enigmas and secret crimes. Yet  Double Indemnity  adds in an extra layer of complexity – lighting also reveals the hidden evils within the characters. Thus, it is used as a narra...

spectre analysis

Image
The first thing we see when we start the move is this big skeleton smoking a cigarette as if to show cigarettes cause death. Also noticed how the skeleton is wearing a hat as if to show it has money or did have when he was alive this could be to show further that no matter how rich you are you still can die if you smoke.   Shows he is hiding his identity from the woman however he is holding his mask as if to take it off to show her who he really is the woman looks very intrigued to find out. They are both dressed well as if to show wealth. Shows danger as he is walking on a high building also shows levels of skill ask he is not scared and he is up straight and well balanced. I also noticed how the camera is on a side shot of him to show the people below him as if to say he is above everyone and better and more skilled. Also by the lighting I can tell it is in the day time and I can also see this by how clear I can see him in the scene this also shows a lot about his charact...

Smarties, Skids, Preppies, Granolas. Loners, Lovers, the In and the Out Crowd rub sleep out of their eyes and head for the main building. PADUA HIGH PARKING LOT - DAY KAT STRATFORD, eighteen, pretty -- but trying hard not to be -- in a baggy granny dress and glasses, balances a cup of coffee and a backpack as she climbs out of her battered, baby blue '75 Dodge Dart. A stray SKATEBOARD clips her, causing her to stumble an...

Music in film noir

Music in film noir -  Smoke. Shadows. Moody strains of jazz. Welcome to the world of "noir musical" films, where tormented antiheroes and hard-boiled musicians battle obsession and struggle with their music and ill-fated love triangles.  Sultry divas dance and sing the blues in shrouded nightclubs. Romantic intrigue clashes with backstage careers.
