In film, a match cut is a cut from one shot to another where the two shots are matched by the action or subject and subject matter. For example, in a duel a shot can go from a long shot on both contestants via a cut to a medium closeup shot of one of the duellists.
Match on action - Cutting on action or matching on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. A common example is a man walking up to a door and reaching for the knob.
- Graphical match cut - is an extremely powerful transitional device in modern editing. Here, an idea is conveyed within a single assembly – a single cut. This cut’s intention is to skip forward or backward in time while a) maintaining a continuity of action and b) creating a metaphorical link between the images that bookend the cut.
